Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's earnestness struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
