Roughly fifty cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Officers state they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered many other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; authorities are presently not aware of any injuries in relation with the incident," they stated.
City officials announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.
An important official commented the incident made him without words and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he stated on online, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
