The nation’s food safety authority stated it intends to initiate a total removal of numerous ostriches at a ranch after the supreme court declined to block the controversial slaughter.

Universal Ostrich Farms, situated close to the town of Edgewood, British Columbia, was first ordered in the month of May to eradicate close to 400 ostriches, amid fears of an spread of H5N1 avian flu.

Sixty-nine birds have previously perished after the outbreak of a flu-like illness.

On Wednesday, the nation’s top court issued an temporary halt on the cull order as it weighed whether to take up the matter.

The escalating dispute over the birds – and a simmering distrust of government – have inspired protesters to descend on the property, with many broadcasting their anger on social media.

The case has also penetrated Canada’s federal politics.

Earlier this fall, the opposition leader, the Tory leader, was questioned repeatedly by reporters whether he supported the demonstrators.

The Tory leader has steered clear of making specific comments on the issue, despite many within his party protesting against the cull.

He told the press the issue had been poorly handled from the start but avoided mentioning the word “ostrich”.

International Involvement and Proposals

Several high-profile individuals from the US have petitioned authorities in Canada.

The US health secretary proposed to relocate the ostriches to his property in Florida.

An US wealthy businessman has also pleaded with the authorities to rescind its cull order.

Health and Ethical Arguments

The national authorities stated the relevant agency was following a “stamping out” policy in order to contain the spread of bird flu, a move in line with wider guidance from international health bodies.

However, animal advocacy groups have called on the agency to conduct additional tests on the birds to verify they are carrying the virus.

The farm owners said that because the most recent fatality occurred on 15 January 2025, with the surviving majority seeming healthy or recovered, the flock has developed at least partial herd immunity against the virus.

They have also cast doubt on the extent and reliability of testing on the ostriches.

Farm Spokesperson Reaction

Recently, the ranch representative, told the media that the agency was “murdering” birds in good health.

“They are ancient creatures that have endured millions of years, but they won’t endure the government agency,” she said.

A partner said he was concerned that there is no justice left”.

Court and Authority Findings

A national court, however, found that allowing the birds to stay alive could result in the transmission of bird flu to different species, the poultry industry – or to humans.

The authority has not said when it plans to begin slaughtering the birds.

Culling Procedures

A 2016 guideline document, obtained under public access laws, says the birds can be euthanized by various methods, the recommended being injection, which needs multiple individuals: one to hold the ostrich by restraining it, one to hold the head, and a third to administer the injection.

Staff can also use gas chambers or break the birds’ necks.

Employees of the organization can only shoot the birds “as a last resort”, if they have a trained shooter on site.
