The anticipation about The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team could be building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
