Outrage Explodes as Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Fierce Criticism
Figures from across the partisan divide and the Hollywood world are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the tragic passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Online Statement
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to social media to describe the late director as "anguished and struggling". In a post, he asserted Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Detention
Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident. It is reported his bail was set at a substantial amount.
A Wave of Condemnation from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's words was swift and scathing.
“What a vile and despicable statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, also criticized the remarks. She referenced prior comments from Trump about political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Can you get any lower?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Criticism from His Own Political Ranks
Some GOP lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also alluded to struggles with addiction and mental health within families.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He publicly challenged members in his political party to justify the statements.
The Director's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."
Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation following the shooting of a different individual.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
