The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
- Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.
The industry laments the passing to a true visionary whose impact on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
