US Officials Disclose Detainment in Disrupted New Year's Eve Bomb Plan Near LA
Law enforcement officials stated on Monday that they had managed to foil a detailed plot to detonate bombs at multiple sites operated by two corporate businesses on New Year's Eve in the LA region. The move resulted from the arrest of suspects linked to an radical group espousing anti-capitalist and anti-authority views.
Individuals Detained During Isolated Practice
The four people were detained last Friday in the Mojave Desert located east of Los Angeles while they were according to officials rehearsing their proposed operation. Federal attorneys presented overhead monitoring footage to journalists, which captured the suspects transporting a big obscure object to a table. Authorities stressed that the arrests took place before the suspects could construct a working bomb.
Names of the Those Charged Released
According to the public legal filing, the four individuals identified are Audrey Illeene Carroll, 30; Zachary Aaron Page, 32 years old; Dante Gaffield, 24; and Tina Lai, who is 41. All four are reportedly from the LA region.
Suspected Motive and Group Affiliations
While authorities did not clearly outline a motive, they said the group are members of a offshoot called the Turtle Island Liberation Front. This entity reportedly advocates for "the working class to rise up and resist against the capitalist system," as per the legal filing.
Each suspect is charged with involve conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of a bomb. The government noted that further charges are expected in the next few weeks.
Elements of the Alleged "Operation Midnight Sun"
Authorities stated that one of the suspects had devised a step-by-step blueprint last month to attack five or more commercial sites across Southern California on New Year's Eve. The intended sites were likened to "similar to Amazon" distribution warehouses.
"The plan was specific," the attorney stated. "It included step-by-step instructions to build IEDs … and identified several sites across the county of Orange and Los Angeles."
According to the probe and legal filings, the plan called for planting bags filled with intricate IEDs that were set to be set off at the same time at midnight on New Year's Eve at five sites. New Year's Eve was identified as an perfect time since the document indicated "fireworks will be going off at this time so blast noises will be less likely to be detected."
An eight-page manually written plan, titled "OPERATION MIDNIGHT SUN," noted that more targets could be included. The facilities were described as property and buildings owned by two separate corporations connected with activities affecting national and international trade.
Future Plans and Proof Found
The investigation also indicated that two members in the group had discussed subsequent attacks focusing on ICE agents personnel and transport with IEDs in 2026. One accused allegedly said that such strikes "would take some of them out and scare the rest of them."
The plotting were allegedly discussed both at an face-to-face gathering in Los Angeles and through an secure messaging app.
Images featured in the court documents reveal a isolated site with what officials described as IED-construction components strewn across portable tables.
The filing details that the group "each brought explosive materials to the site, among them different sizes of plastic pipes, identified as potassium nitrate, charcoal briquettes, fuel powder, powdered sulfur, and items to be used as igniters, along with other items."
The scheme also had steps on how to manufacture the explosives and how to prevent leaving evidence that could be connected back to the individuals. The accused had in the recent past acquired components and other materials, including buys from e-commerce sites.
Operation and Aftermath
Authorities intervened last week when the suspects were rehearsing the operation in the isolated region near a California town. "They possessed all the components they were necessary to construct an working bomb at that site," the prosecutor stated.
During executed searches, investigators allegedly discovered signs for the Turtle Island Liberation Front at one suspect's home that demanded "America Must Fall", and "Death to ICE". At another accused's apartment, police discovered a version of the elaborate bomb plan.
Those arrested were taken into custody without a struggle. They were due to make a court appearance in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.
