Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these medications should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
