Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, a fortnight before the Melbourne event.
