In today's Britain, public demonstration has ceased to be a basic freedom. Instead, it has become a conditional permission that those in power grant or withhold at their discretion. This constitutes the implication of new regulations that the current government is advancing, which would determine when and where demonstrations can occur, with potential imprisonment for those who disobey these restrictions.

Gradual Weakening of Democratic Rights

Earlier administrations had already undermined this essential right: the previous Tory administration had given law enforcement extensive additional powers, which international human rights organizations had condemned as "significant and undue limitations" on democratic freedoms. Collectively, these incremental assaults on liberty have practically eliminated the historically earned right to public demonstration.

Exploiting Tragedy to Rationalize Crackdown

The latest limitations are being defended by citing last week's terrible anti-Jewish attack on a British Islamic center. We can all agree on universal agreement that the security of Jewish communities in Britain must be safeguarded. However, employing this horrific incident as a pretext to stifle opposition is not only disconnected to that responsibility but perverts it.

"If you cannot set boundaries at mass killing, you likely cannot draw the line at democratic principles," commented a prominent American author, whose words that rings true for the current government.

Historical Context of Protest

Consider Britain's long tradition of protest and direct action against racial discrimination and authoritarianism, from the historic 1936 Cable Street confrontation to after World War II Jewish anti-fascist movements and the 1970s mobilizations against the National Front. Many of these historical demonstrators were branded as extremists in their era, even while they were advocating the rights of minorities.

Current Reality

In the current complex situation, here's what's actually occurring: The Israeli government – a sovereign nation – is perpetrating acts that international bodies have characterized as systematic destruction. Its warfare have prompted the global justice body to issue arrest warrants against Benjamin Netanyahu and his ex-military leader.

International popular sentiment has changed significantly against Israel's military campaign. In Britain, a substantial majority of the public believe Israel has likely committed war crimes. Most people would support a complete ban on weapons exports to the nation, and approve the detention of the Israeli leader.

Suppressing Opposition

Having essentially failed the argument, Israel's supporters are now exploiting a despicable anti-Jewish attack to attempt to silence a mass movement against a ethical disaster. The British government seems involved in this attempt. Government officials have failed to implement extensive restrictions on Israel and have allowed weapon shipments to proceed.

People who are demonstrating against the destruction of Gaza have been characterized as hateful extremists. Yet there's a significant reason why there hasn't been a broader suppression on these protesters until now: extremely few protesters have made genuinely hateful statements about Jewish people, giving police authorities minimal reason to intervene.

Dangerous Conflation

Equating Jewish identity with the policies of the Israeli state is not only manipulative but also harmful. The official definition of antisemitism, adopted by the British government and numerous institutions, has been appropriately questioned for potentially restricting valid commentary of Israel. However, there should be universal agreement about one of its key examples: that "holding Jewish people collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel" constitutes prejudice against Jews.

Increasing Limitations

This is why we've arrived at a point where law enforcement can propose that protests criticizing Israel's actions should be canceled because they might "accidentally or intentionally" endorse anti-Jewish sentiment. Similarly, political figures have declared that acknowledgment of Palestine as a nation has made political parties "complicit" in supposed mistreatment experienced by Jewish communities.

Inconsistent Treatment

On the same day as the synagogue attack, the Israel's army killed numerous of Palestinian civilians in Gaza – increasing the horrific toll from 24 months of daily atrocities that have taken tens of thousands of lives. British politicians and media outlets have barely concealed the minimal importance they attach to Palestinian existence. This represents one of the boldest expressions of discrimination in our time.

Crossing Thresholds

Our government has already crossed a dangerous boundary by banning Palestine Action, a non-violent, human rights-focused activist collective. Multiple thousands of British protesters have been detained, mostly for holding placards opposing genocide and supporting the proscribed group. Many of those arrested are pensioners; among them a former clergyman and the daughter of a World War II genocide survivor.

International Parallels

It's not difficult to see where this path leads. In the United States, political leaders helped demonize pro-Palestinian protests: a former House Speaker suggested that some were "linked with" foreign governments, while the current president characterized such protests as anti-Jewish. In taking these actions, they helped legitimize the authoritarian crackdown on such protests – and on freedom of expression in general.

Future Concerns

If a hard-right government comes to power, it would be granted extensive authority to control opposition. What might a Reform government do with this restrictive framework? Our forebears struggled, endured hardship and sacrificed their lives to secure our freedoms. We may ultimately regret how easily we permitted them to be eroded.
