Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the option to challenge certain calls from the official, echoing the protocol already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
