Team Principal Wolff has led Mercedes to historic success in F1

Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to offload a portion of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal values Mercedes at £4.6bn – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – following the McLaren team were valued at £3.5bn in a change of ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake in the region of five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team principal and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and industrial group Ineos, who both hold a third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We are providing no comment on this. The governance of the team will remain unaltered, and all three partners are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in Formula One."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in worth of Mercedes F1 since Ineos acquired its share for £208m in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the growth in market values of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years due to the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt, which was released last summer and earned over $630 million (£458m) at the box office.

It is the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports film ever released.

Present Performance

Mercedes are second in the team standings, trailing McLaren, with three Grands Prix left in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has won 2 of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes won a unprecedented eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
